Traveling to Madeira from the United States
United Airlines is set to expand its Portuguese destinations with a new direct route connecting Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) to Madeira Airport (FNC) beginning June 7, 2025. This thrice-weekly service will make United the first U.S. carrier to offer non-stop flights to the Portuguese archipelago, complementing their existing routes to mainland Portugal's Lisbon and Porto. The new route represents a significant enhancement in accessibility for American travelers interested in exploring Madeira.
Currently, Azores Airlines operates the only direct connection between the United States and Madeira, with year-round service from New York's JFK Airport. Their flight covers approximately 5,068 kilometers in about 7 hours and 5 minutes. The addition of these direct routes from both New York airports has made Madeira, renowned for its spectacular landscapes, hiking trails, wine culture, and rich history, considerably more accessible to American tourists seeking to experience the island's diverse attractions without the hassle of connecting flights.
